BREATHTAKING VIEWS

Tourists from all over the world love it for its wonderful beaches, the typical cuisine and the narrow alleys of its historic center. Perched on a rock jutting out over the sea, it boasts breathtaking views of white beaches and turquoise sea.
Its morphology is particular: the upper part, where most of the population lives and the daily life of the village takes place, and the lower part called “Marina”, which lies by the sea and the marina of Tropea. The historic center was once enclosed by walls and could only be accessed through guarded gates.

The symbol of the town is the Sanctuary of Santa Maria dell'Isola, which stands on a promontory in front of the town. Worth visiting is also the garden in the back of the sanctuary, a green space mostly composed of olive trees and prickly pears. Here you can enjoy a breathtaking view, in July and August at night as well.
Another noteworthy site is the Cathedral of Maria Santissima di Romania, a Romanesque building dating back to 1100, containing the sacred effigy of the Madonna of Romania, the protector of the town.
The sacred image is considered miraculous by the population for having protected Tropea inhabitants from bombardments, plagues and earthquakes. Two unexploded bombs are still preserved on the sides of the main portal.

WHITE SAND AND CRYSTAL CLEAR SEA

During the day you can stroll through the streets of the center, shopping in small workshops or admiring the ancient portals that represented noble families. In the evening you can enjoy a good aperitif and then a dinner based on fish and typical products. Scattered among the main squares and the various alleys you will find lots of restaurants and clubs offering music until late.
The marine area boasts 2 km of beach, with fine white sand, and 1 km of rocky coastline. You can dive in the crystal clear waters or circumnavigate the rock of Santa Maria dell’Isola, enjoying the view of the old town perched on the cliff from the sea.

At the marina of Tropea you can rent rafts, motor or sailing boats for an excursion to the Aeolian Islands. The marina is the ideal place for pleasant walks, and in the evening you can attend theater shows and cultural activities in a magical atmosphere.
Among not-to-be-missed events we recommend the festival that celebrates the red onion and the traditional cuisine of the place and, in September, the Tropea Blues Festival, a blues music festival with performances of musical groups taking place for a week. The format of the event is characterized by the almost simultaneous exhibition, among the streets of the old town, of numerous bands, as in the tradition of the birthplace of this musical genre, New Orleans.
